Why did this Leawood homeowner replace his wood deck with stamped concrete?
The homeowner wanted an outdoor space that looked better and needed much less upkeep than a wood deck. He also wanted the new patio to match the colors and style of his house. The home has white siding and black window frames, so a dark stamped concrete patio fits it better than natural-toned wood.

How was the stamped concrete patio built?
Cascade built the patio in four stages: removing the deck, pouring the concrete, stamping and coloring it, and sealing it.
- Remove the wood deck. The crew took out the deck boards, stairs, and footing posts and cleared the site.
- Pour the concrete. Ready-mix concrete was delivered by truck and carried to the backyard with a tracked power buggy.
- Float, stamp, and color. The crew floated the fresh, dark-tinted concrete smooth, pressed in the large Grand Ashlar pattern, and added the antique dark gray finish.
- Seal the patio. Sealer was applied across the entire surface.

What is a Grand Ashlar stamped concrete pattern?
Grand Ashlar is a stamped concrete pattern that looks like large cut-stone pavers laid in an ashlar layout of rectangles and squares in several sizes. The large version used here makes a bold, tailored surface, and it suits a backyard patio right next to the house.
What does an antique finish do on stamped concrete?
An antique finish is a second color that settles into the recessed joints and texture of the stamp pattern. On this Leawood patio, an antique dark gray over the dark base color adds depth, contrast, and definition, so each stone shape reads more clearly than it would in a single flat color.
Why seal a stamped concrete patio?
Sealer protects the concrete surface, helps extend its life, and brings out the richness of the colors. The photo below shows the difference: the sealed half of the patio is deep and dark, and the unsealed half is still flat gray.

Is stamped concrete lower maintenance than a wood deck?
For most homeowners, yes. A stamped concrete patio doesn’t need the regular sanding, staining, or board replacement a wood deck does. Its main upkeep is periodic cleaning and resealing. That trade was the reason this Leawood homeowner chose stamped concrete over a new deck.
The finished stamped concrete patio
The finished patio completely changed the look of the backyard. The dark Grand Ashlar surface matches the home’s black windows and trim, and the homeowner has a durable, low-maintenance space where the old deck stood. He was very happy with how the project turned out.
