What is a stamped concrete patio?
A stamped concrete patio is a poured concrete slab that is colored and pressed with a textured pattern while it is still workable, so the finished surface looks like stone, slate or pavers. Because it is one continuous slab, there are no individual pavers to shift or weeds growing between joints, and the color and pattern can be matched to the house.
Recent project: wood deck to stamped concrete patio in Leawood
A Leawood homeowner wanted to replace an aging wood deck with something more attractive and much lower maintenance that complemented his home. We removed the deck and poured a stamped concrete patio with a large Grand Ashlar pattern, a dark black base color, an antique dark gray finish for depth and contrast, and a full coat of sealer. See the full Leawood project.

- A free on-site estimate to look at the space and talk through layout, pattern and color.
- Removal of what’s there now, including old wood decks, when you’re replacing an existing structure.
- Pouring and finishing the concrete for the new patio.
- Stamping the pattern, such as a large Grand Ashlar cut-stone look.
- Color: a base color plus an antique finish to add depth and definition to the pattern.
- Sealing the finished patio to protect the surface and bring out the color.
How does the installation process work?
- Estimate and design. We visit, measure, and help you choose a pattern and color that fit your home.
- Site prep. We remove any old deck or surface and prepare the area for the new slab.
- Pour, stamp and color. The crew pours the concrete, floats it smooth, presses in the pattern and applies the color finish.
- Seal. The patio is sealed edge to edge.

Stamped concrete patio vs. wood deck: which needs less maintenance?
For most homeowners, a stamped concrete patio needs far less upkeep than a wood deck. There are no boards to sand, stain or replace. The main maintenance is periodic cleaning and resealing. That’s why many of the homeowners we work with replace an aging ground-level deck with stamped concrete rather than rebuilding it in wood. If you’d rather keep a deck, see our deck installation, repair and restoration services.
Why should a stamped concrete patio be sealed?
Sealer protects the concrete surface, helps extend its life, and brings out the richness of the color. The difference is easy to see: in the photo below, the sealed half of the patio is deep and dark, while the unsealed half is still flat gray.

Stamped concrete patio FAQs
Can you replace my old wood deck with a stamped concrete patio?
Yes. We remove the existing deck and replace it with a new stamped concrete patio. Our recent Leawood project is an example of exactly that.
Can I choose the pattern and color?
Yes. We help you pick a stamp pattern and a color combination that fit your home. On the Leawood patio, the homeowner chose a large Grand Ashlar pattern with a dark black base color and an antique dark gray finish.
What does an antique finish do on stamped concrete?
An antique finish is a second color that settles into the recessed joints and texture of the stamp pattern. It adds depth, contrast and definition, so each stone shape reads more clearly than it would in one flat color.
How do I maintain a stamped concrete patio?
Clean it periodically and reseal it over time to protect the surface and keep the color rich. There’s no sanding, staining or board replacement like a wood deck needs.
